For those that don't know the whole story: Approximately 7 years ago (imagine that) Randall posted this on the blog https://blog.xkcd.com/2010/11/05/submarines/ and made some vague references to tough times in the comics. On in to 2011, he posted this on the blog, and things seemed to be scary but hopeful. https://blog.xkcd.com/2011/06/30/family-illness/ . He's made mention several times about it over the years inside the comics, and I really believe that "Time" was made for some express purpose as to get his emotions out. But this update seriously is making a grown 32 year old man weep openly at his desk (thankfully I have a door that closes), as I always wondered how things were. Things look good, and this makes my heart happy.

Had the same with the previous comic, that this one references. I felt so much relief when I reached the end of this one...

The Life Cycle of Phoenixes

Hello again!

I’m sorry the comic has been gone for so long. In October, some bad code was injected into the site’s code which was sending emails out asking for people’s bank account numbers and such. The site was taken down and wasn’t brought back up because I didn’t know how to fix the problem. Good friend Greg Truono got it back and running.

In addition to getting the site back up, I’m also planning on updating Monday through Friday and taking the weekends off I’m going to start Tuesday.

A lot has happened since we last talked. Some highlights:

1. I got married. We had a delightful wedding and we gave out rules manuals and sets of dice at the reception. The rules manuals were put together by amazing pal Bailey Kung.

2. I stopped practicing clinical medicine for reasons I don’t mind talking about, but don’t really want to talk about here.

3. I visited the West Coast for the first time, and then took a train trip across America. It’s a really wide country!

It is nice to see you again.

ISS Astronaut Snaps 3-Second Exposure to Show How ‘Crazy’ the Atmosphere Really Is

atmosphere1

It’s one thing to visualize different layers of gasses in the Earth’s atmosphere and see drawings and models in a book or online… it’s another thing entirely to capture it on camera. But of course, that’s one of the perks of being an astronaut on the International Space Station, you get to do a whole lot of things that are “another thing entirely.”

The photograph above was taken by astronaut Reid Wiseman and uploaded to his Twitter feed early this morning. It’s a 3-second exposure, and we know this because he captioned the photo “3 second shutter exposure at night shows how crazy our #atmosphere really is.”

Further explanation of what you’re seeing was offered by Reddit user smsmkiwi in a comment:

The orange and green arcs are layers of glowing gas are called airglow. Each layer glows at a specific wavelength or band of wavelengths. The broad orange layer at the top is due to atomic oxygen from ~250 km altitude. The narrow green layer is also atomic oxygen and that originates from near 96 km altitude. Just below that is another orange layer due to atomic sodium from meteors burning up in the upper atmosphere at ~90 km altitude. Maybe a contribution in that layer by hydroxyl from 87km also.

‘Crazy’ indeed. To see a higher resolution version of the photo or to keep up with Wiseman as he continues on uploading amazing images from space, be sure to visit his Twitter and give him a follow.

And as a bonus, here’s the next photo he Tweeted from space not long after the photograph at the top:

All music is just performances of 4'33" in studios where another band happened to be playing at the time.

Given the amount of background noise mics pick up, this is just about impossible.

That's Cage's (and, I presume, Randall's) point. It's not 4:33 of silence; it's 4:33 of attention to background noise.
